Abstract oil (24" x 20") by Norman Gorbaty (b. 1932), circa late 1950s. Gorbaty was a young artist in his 1920s when his work was included in a 1954 show of American printmakers at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). He studied at Yale under Josef Albers and Bernard Chaet. In 1956, he chose to pursue a career in graphic art in the advertising industry, eventually opening his own firm and becoming one of the most respected and creative talents in the industry for fifty years.
All the while, through the years he continued to create his own art in the evenings and weekends. A 2011 New York Times article documented his stunning life's work and the virtual discovery of his paintings, carvings and sculptures, many of which are also published in the book "Norman Gorbaty: Works of a Modern Master" (2009, Donald Kuspit and Gorbaty and Family, Publisher North American Thought Combine).
Very little of Gorbaty's work has been made available for sale. This dynamic oil, found in the Northampton area near where he attended college as an Amherst undergrad, dates to the late 1950s and is a wonderful example of his early style. It shows the influence of his lifetime fascination with the Italian Futurists. On canvas board, measuring 24" x 20", as framed 32.25" x 28.25".
