moreAs unique as this lithograph is, it is very much of it's period. Random sized squares and rectangles fill the paper, some empty, some with symbols. The symbols are vaguely familiar- a 'T' (perhaps for Townley), a heart, a directional ying-yang spiral and more. They are both archetypical and new. Executed in a creamy off white paper, the work is numbered 16/125. It is titled 'Phases of the Moon' and signed lower right 'Hugh Townley 1966'. The print is framed in a flat modernist silver gilt wood frame under glass.
Hugh Townley (1923-2008) is an American printmaker, sculptor and educator. Active from the early 1950s up until his death, Townley made works in wood and concrete. After enrolling in the Army at 19, Townley attended University of Wisconsin's Fine Art program. At a teachers suggestion he traveled to Paris, France to study with Ossip Zadkin followed by a year working for the Marshall Plan in the Hague. Work produced during this period earned him his first one man show. He returned to the USA in '52 teaching at Layton School of Art, Milwaukee, Beloit College, Boston and Harvard Universities and Brown University where he eventually retired from. In 1989, Townley and his wife, a fellow artist and writer moved to Vermont. A total original, Townley was exhibited in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Arts (MOMA), NYC at the age of 32. Townley has had more than fifty one-man exhibitions in museums and galleries and participated in over one hundred group exhibitions. His estate is represented by the Big Town Gallery in Rochester, VT and his website hughtownley.com is still active.
