These two paintings are signed by the Vendée artist François Brillaud (1846-1916): son of grocers, in 1897 he made a copy of the Baptism of Christ after Francesco Albani, which he presented to the General Council of the Vendée and for which he was awarded a scholarship to study fine arts in Paris. His teachers were Jules Breton and Isidore Pils.
Under the influence of Jules Breton, he first painted scenes of country life, portraits of his family and local notables.
From 1898, sensitive to the public's taste for Art Nouveau, he painted nudes and genre scenes.
He also painted some still lifes and later scenes of military life in which the teachings of Pils can be found.
He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes between 1877 and 1912.
His paintings can be seen at the Museum of La Roche sur Yon and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes


Good condition: a small tear and some small holes, an old restoration
