In roman mythology, diana is the goddess of the hunt and of the night, similar to artemis in greek mythology. She is depicted wearing a tunic with a crescent moon on her head. Our bronze bears the signature of houdon on the base "houdon sculp." jean-antoine houdon, passionate about the art of casting, made two large bronzes of diana himself at the ateliers du roule in paris, one in 1782 (san marino, california), the other in 1790 (paris, musée du louvre).
