Date: 1853Description: In the improvised dry dock on the coast of the sea near Bordeaux, a large sailing ship lies on its side and is keel-hauled. Instead of the punishment of "keelhauling" long used in seafaring, the intensive cleaning of the underwater hull is meant here. In the course of time, the hull of the wooden sailing ships became clogged with all kinds of shells that impaired the speed of the hull as it glided through the water.
