Wall lamp 'duca' designed by nicola gallizia in 2015. Wall lamp giving indirect and reflected light. Painted metal structure. Manufactured by oluce, italy. Duca is the project specifically designed by nicola gallizia for the new me milan il duca, a prestigious address in terms of luxury hotels in milan. Initially envisaged by gallizia in the table version for decorating the sleeping area in the suites, a wall-mounted adaptation was then also developed to light up the corridors on the floors. The initial idea for duca was a light source able to take up where the concept of the classical bedside lamp had left off, reinventing its shape, combining it with a very soft, indirect light, of which it is almost impossible to perceive the source but which lights up the table and bedside table area accurately and efficiently. Fascinated by theatrical lighting, which takes the origin of the source away from the eye and only allows itself to be detected in the beam on the front of stage, nicola gallizia works on structural subtraction to focus on the lighting effect, entrusting the light with task of revealing itself. A relativism that becomes a connotative trait in the wall-mounted duca version: the perception of the wall lamp changes radically within the space in relation to where the observer is located. Like during a lunar eclipse, the light source appears, disappears and then reappears: involving the eye in an unexpected and dynamic game. Oluce lighting design aesthetic is crisp, linear, and decorative. Oluce, already participating at the 9th triennale in milan, throughout its long history, has received numerous acknowledgements including two golden compass awards, two design awards and the gold medal at the 13th triennale in milan. Its lamps appear in the most important permanent design collections worldwide. Oluce’s expertise reveals its unparalleled manufacturing excellence which transforms into objects an untiring technological research into the potential of light. Each lamp is a milestone along this journey. Over time, from unusual materials, original designs and new lighting sources ensued revolutionary iconic designs by tito agnoli, joe colombo, marco zanuso, ostuni e forti, and vico magistretti, who since the 50s, have been rewriting the history of lighting. Recent collections reaffirm oluce design and decorative approach, expressed through the signs by italian and international designers such as angeletti & ruzza, francesco rota, nendo, victor vasilev, nicola gallizia, christophe pillet, mist-o and david lopez quincoces. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
