It is from central Africa, where the range of this now scarce animal has been greatly reduced due to loss of habitat and poaching. The figure is unsigned, but it is evident that the artist had first-hand experience with living black rhinoceroses. It was made circa 1960-1975 and has a mellow brown patina obtained with age and with camel-colored wood showing through areas for emphasis and with normal wear. See less
