Incorporating etching and … Read more Up for sale is this bright and whimsical mixed media collage by French artist Pierre Marie Brisson. Incorporating etching and paint on handmade paper, this charming print is signed in pencil by the artist and marked "EA" (“épreuve d'artiste,” or Artist's Proof). The print, measuring 20" x 12 3/4", floats on white linen and is framed in wood with an overall size of 27 5/8" x 20 3/4". It is in very good condition with some minor scuffs to the frame, as pictured. With the tent stripes in bold primary colors and wiry figure, we are reminded of Alexander Calder's Cirque.

About the artist:

Pierre Marie was born in Orléans, France in 1955 and by the age of 14 he was an artist. He never had formal art school training, but he did have a teacher who encouraged him to follow his dreams. As a young man, he was inspired by, and worked with, several artists including Bernard Saby, Bram Van Velde and James Coignard, essentially learning his craft as an apprentice.

Using a collage technique, Brisson combines various elements in his compositions, imitating the rough surface of an ancient wall, the craquelure of old paint, the decorative pattern of wallpaper and woven fabric. Brisson has an extensive exhibition history, primarily in Europe and his work can be found in the permanent collections of institutions throughout the world. He has a studio in Paris as well as one in the ancient city of Aigues Morte in the south of France.
