The colour range and design are both rare on this Art Deco carpet. The soft red field displays two giant rosettes and bi-tonal leaf medallions with curlicue surrounding tendrils. Multicolour paeonies on black vines are supplemented by various exotic fruits and curving leaves. Unusual polychrome fretwork fills the corners and accents the long sides of the field.
The palette is wide with orange, yellow, various greens, ivory, black and numerous distinct blues among the many accent tones.
This extraordinary carpet was a custom creation of the American firm Elbrook, woven in their factory in Tientsin. This carpet has no parallels and it must have been woven for a specific American retail client who approved the pattern and colours. It was not made on spec to be sold in a department store or retail rug shop. No parallel examples are known.
The condition is very good, with some minor selective colour corrosion toward the center. This Art Deco carpet has been cleaned professionally and is free of any stains or odors
