In 1913, Mary Austin lived for a time in London. According to Lawrence Powell, in California Classics: The Creative Literature of the Golden State (First published in 1971), Mary Austin was asked to write a series of essays to accompany British painter Sutton Palmer's watercolors of California. Adam and Charles Black published California, Land of the Sun in 1914. The book did not appear in the United States until 1927, published without the paintings as the Lands of the Sun.
This is the first edition of 'California' The Land of the Sun' by Mary Austin. The book is in very good condition. The cover is green cloth with some vibrant colors on the front cover. The book has 32 tipped-in color plates drawn by Sutton Palmer and a fold-out map of California. Corners are lightly bumped and rubbed with light shelf wear on the bottom edges. The free endpapers are browned. Austins' writings of the beauties up and down California are paired beautifully with scenic views by Sutton Palmer, including Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Mount Shasta, Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mt. Tamalpais, Glendale Valley, San Diego, and much more. Adam and Charles Black, London, 1914. First Edition.
Fold-out map of California at the rear ( please see photo). Thirty-two tipped-in color plates (including frontispiece) with titled tissue guards, reproduced paintings by Sutton Palmer. Green cloth with a signed pictorial design by Henry Hunt Clark, printed in blue, orange, and yellow on the front and spine; background to titling blocked in gilt on the front and spine with top edge gilt, wear to extremities and spine joints; shelf-wear.
