this underwood no. 6 is a full-size american standard typewriter from the 1930s, built by the underwood elliott fisher company. The no. 6 succeeded the legendary underwood no. 5, the most successful typewriter design in history, whose layout became the blueprint for almost every typewriter that followed. Underwood machines were used by writers such as ernest hemingway, f. Scott fitzgerald, william faulkner and jack kerouac.

what makes this one special

• a rare wide carriage – the gold decal reads "6" and "14", the model number and its 14-inch carriage. Most underwoods have a shorter carriage, which is why this machine has such an impressive, commanding presence.

• original gold lettering – the front carries the classic "underwood" decal with the company crest. The rear plate still reads "underwood – made in u.s.a. – product of underwood elliott fisher co. – protected by united states and foreign patents".

• decimal tabulator – above the number row sits a row of round tab keys marked 1, 10, 100 and 1000, used in 1930s offices to type neat columns of figures.

• beautiful open-frame design – the fan of typebars, the gears and the ribbon spools are visible from every angle, so the machine looks just as good from the side and back as from the front.
