Untitled Abstract, an original oil on canvas by Edward Gilliam, is a piece for the true collector. Gilliam's use of color and paint thickness immediately captivates the viewer. It is very difficult to do the piece justice with 2-D images, but there are several photos provided in the image bank that attempt to capture the detailing in Gilliam's work. This painting is a phenomenal example of the artist's ability to project emotion. This masterful original artwork would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for abstracts, contemporary paintings, and color-rich works of art.
Edward Gilliam, an American artist, was known for his abstract paintings that reflect an intimate understanding, and true kinship, of historical attitudes.
Born in 1941 in Denver, Gilliam had little initial talent for the fine arts, but an insatiable drive to become an artist. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received an MFA in Fine Arts, as well as the prestigious James Phelan Fellowship in Art. Through his studies, as well as extensive travel in Europe, Asia, and Mexico, he found inspiration in the first-generation Abstract Expressionists, the Europeans from the Impressionists on, and in particular Hans Hoffman.
After his schooling, Gilliam continued to live in Los Angeles for 20 years, flourishing as an abstract painter and muralist, before moving to Madrid, New Mexico where he opened his Studio/Gallery in 2001, and later San Patricio de Melaque Jalisco, Mexico, where he continued to paint until his death in 2020.
His art has been collected by several museums, including the Eli Broad Collection in Los Angeles and Paris, the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, and the San Diego Museum of Art, among many others. He has created numerous murals throughout the western United States, including the “Tribute to Bonita Bingham,” “Weight Lifters,” and “Sea Breeze Circuit,” all on Venice Beach, as well as “Doreena’s Fortune Telling,” on Santa Monica Pier, among others. His works were most recently exhibited at the Gerald Peters Gallery, and Galeria La Manzanilla in Mexico.
