Of large size modelled standing, its coat with clipped clay decoration, its face crisply painted in black with yellow and orange detail to the eyes, the yellow basket with gilt handle, filled with brightly coloured fruit, the oval base with a moulded design and a thick gilt band, 25.5cm length, crisply impressed 'Lloyd Shelton' on the base. Animal figures with this mark are rare. A model of a spaniel is discussed by Clive Mason Pope, 'A-Z of Staffordshire Dogs A Potted History', p. 84. The author notes that it is the only example known to him. D G Rice in 'English Porcelain Animals of the 19th Century', p. 260, mentions a bull with a similar mark. Anthony Oliver in 'Staffordshire Pottery Tribal Art of England', p. 116 illustrates a similar smaller Lloyd poodle complete with tail, although it is not clear whether this example is marked. The modeling and execution would, however, suggest that they are both from the same factory. Good condition - crack on both sides of the base and small chips to the foot rim on the back. Displays beautifully. See less
