Konkylie Pendant by Louis Weisdorf for Lyfa, Denmark – 1964
Rare early edition with gold exterior and yellow/orange interior, originally designed for Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen
Designed in 1964 by architect and industrial designer Louis Weisdorf (b. 1932), the Konkylie (meaning conch shell) pendant was manufactured by Lyfa and famously installed throughout Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Weisdorf, who had previously worked with both Poul Henningsen and Verner Panton, drew inspiration from their structural lighting ideas—particularly Panton’s Moon Lamp.
Weisdorf sought to simplify and innovate the concept by using twelve identical, kinked aluminium blades, spirally interwoven around a central axis to create a sculptural, light-filtering form. As he noted:
“I proposed a metal version for the setting with red and orange inside and gold anodisation outside to emit a warm light that matched the mood of the gardens.”
This version features gold anodized exteriors and alternating yellow and orange interiors—rare, warm-toned colours used for the original Tivoli installations. The combination produces a dynamic, glowing light effect. Due to its high production cost and complexity, few original Konkylie pendants were made, and the gold variant is particularly scarce and sought after today.
