Duchess Brisée in Louis XVI style, with a lacquered wood frame and original cream color painting.
It is composed of three elements: a Shepherdess, a Stool in the middle and an Armchair with a lower back. These different parts can be separated and used independently. They can therefore be harmoniously arranged on either side of a living room, and can be modulated according to your desires.
The two Bergères with curved, wrap-around backs are topped with a ribbon bow and the armrests with cuffs are moulded and finished in Volutes. The low crossbars are also sculpted, as are the angles of the feet, with flower decorations. The latter, four per armchair, are all tapered and fluted, as are those of the Pouf.
This central part with concave sides unites the whole with homogeneity and gives uninterrupted lines to this resting bed once reconstructed.
This cousin of the Sofa has had its Tapestries completely redone, with care and in the old fashioned way, with aged nail finishes, in accordance with the rules of the Decorative Art of its time. Thus the inside of the backrests is covered with a very pretty Toile de Jouy. It is printed with scenes of life for this century, around the water, such as paintings of men fishing or women washing clothes. A plain fabric ''Paris-Texas Casamance'' has been used to repair the exteriors of this Duchess Broken and for the manufacture of its three thick removable cushions generously filled with feathers. With Double Piping Finishes to underline their structure, they are removable covers, except for the one in the Centre. The fabrics used are made of Linen and mostly Cotton.
The backgrounds with straps and balls are in excellent condition.
One will appreciate the great adaptability of this Duchess with full cheeks which is an undeniable invitation to rest and relaxation. She skillfully combines Charm and Comfort, notably through her sublime Tapestries and her deep forms.
Period : Middle 19th century
Perfect condition after restoration and repair of the fabric.
