Gouache and charcoal by Jean Poulain 1939
Oak frame
Dimensions of the frame included: 110 x 85 cm Dimensions of the work: 84 x 60 cm Biography Jean Poulain is a Belgian artist born in Katanga (formerly Belgian Congo) in 1884 and died in Belgium in 1967. After leaving his family in 1904 to explore the Belgian Congo, he finally set off to discover the entire African continent and it was from 1920 that he developed his great interest in animal painting and drawing. During his numerous travels across the African continent, he encounters many secret tribes and clans, whose locations he keeps secret in order to protect them. His drawings become more and more accomplished as he draws inspiration from the sketches and photographs he brings back from his travels. Since 2002, his drawings have finally come out of oblivion and Jean Poulain is today considered a major artist in the field of animal drawing. This piece has an attribution mark,
