This exceptional Italian Liberty high-back chair, crafted in solid walnut and attributable to the school of Vincenzo Cadorin, represents a refined example of early 20th-century Italian decorative arts.
Executed circa 1900, the chair is distinguished by its sculptural presence and meticulous hand-carved detailing. The tall backrest, newly upholstered in rich red velvet during a late 20th-century restoration, is framed with nailhead trim and supported by elegant barley-twist uprights, a hallmark of traditional craftsmanship reinterpreted in a Liberty context.
The finely carved crest rail features a striking zoomorphic composition of two confronting birds intertwined with flowing vegetal forms, carved in high relief with an openwork center. This motif reflects the Symbolist and Art Nouveau vocabulary associated with Northern Italian ateliers influenced by Vincenzo Cadorin.
The seat is generously proportioned and raised on turned legs joined by spool-turned stretchers, providing both structural integrity and visual rhythm.
Restored in the 1990s after entering the A&MYART Collections, the chair remains in very good condition, with a well-presed patina and updated upholstery consistent with its current presentation.
A compelling example of Italian Art Nouveau seating, this piece bridges functional design and sculptural artistry, making it suitable for collectors of fine decorative arts as well as sophisticated interior settings.
