Handwoven in pure wool and originating circa 1950-1959, this vintage 5x7 Afghani kilim enters Rug & Kilim’s Kilim & Flat Weave collection from the northern pastoral tradition. Originating in northern Afghanistan, the textile sequences heathered taupe bands and warm cream stripes, accented by dark chocolate borders with crisp white running stitches that lend the neutral flatweave an understated rhythm.
On the Design:
Connoisseurs of Central Asian textiles will recognize this flatweave as an authentic reflection of northern Afghanistan’s pastoral heritage, coming primarily from across the northern plains of Balkh, Kunduz, and Samangan. Historically nestled along the ancient Silk Road, northern Afghanistan developed a rich flatweaving culture cultivated by semi-nomadic Uzbek, Hazara, and Arab communities. While earlier court and town workshops favored ornate floral motifs saturated with madder red, indigo, and saffron, rural pastoral weavers developed a restrained, nature-driven aesthetic known as the palas. In these northern settlements, women created flatweaves for family dowries and domestic living spaces, relying on ancestral traditions rather than urban cartoons. Flatweaves from this region are celebrated for their pure graphic discipline, celebrating the raw beauty of local Karakul sheep fleece in its natural, undyed state. Dating to the 1950s, this piece preserves the final pre-industrial generation of northern Afghani weaving, embodying an authentic lineage of Central Asian folk art.
Keen eyes for detail will admire how the layout commands presence through disciplined horizontal striping, rich organic texture, and delicate running stitchwork across its field. The field alternates between wide, heathered bands of stone taupe and solid cream stripes, showcasing the varied texture of hand-spun Karakul wool. This mottled salt-and-pepper ground is achieved by blending fleece, creating a tweeded, tactile surface with subtle horizontal abrash. Defining each creamy stripe are dark chocolate pinstripes accented by rhythmic white running stitches. These precise linear dashes function as crisp graphic boundaries, neatly framing each color block while introducing subtle textural relief across the flat surface. Gentle undulations in the linear bands reflect the spontaneous hand of the weaver, giving the flatweave a human cadence that balances pastoral simplicity with enduring modern elegance.
