Handwoven in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 11x5 vintage distressed Afghani kilim runner joins Rug & Kilim’s Kilim & Flat Weave collection. It features an organic horizontal sequence of terracotta, brick red, and camel stripes.
On the Design:
Mid-century Afghani flat-weaves hold a distinctive place in nomadic textile traditions, admired by seasoned collectors for their unpretentious utility, honest materials, and raw graphic vitality. Produced by tribal weavers in northern and central Afghanistan during the 1950s, these flat-weaves served as protective traveling blankets, floor coverings, and domestic dividers for pastoral caravans. Artisans utilized indigenous sheep wool hand-spun to varying calibers, giving each band of natural vegetable and mineral dye an expressive organic texture. Works of this period are cherished for their minimalist visual rhythm, reflecting an ancestral nomadic identity where disciplined horizontal banding creates an understated visual language that resonates powerfully with modern sensibilities.
The field unfolds through a series of irregular horizontal bands that ripple down the length like geological strata. Terracotta red, sun-bleached brick, warm cinnamon, and pale camel stripes break across a shadowy backdrop of charcoal black and walnut brown. The deliberate variation in band width and subtle shifts in weft saturation introduce a dynamic, vibrating energy, softening the contrast between the earth tones and dark perimeter panels. Tightly beaten weft yarns give the wool a dense, supple handle while ensuring structural resilience underfoot. This interplay of warm russet earth tones, crisp natural fiber accents, and dark grounds offers designers an earthy foundation tailored for rustic mountain lodges, modern entryways, and curated gallery corridors.
