An exceptional pair of Brutalist three-light wall sconces, made during the 1950s and 60s, possibly in France or Italy, in wrought iron with a dark patina and hammered and gilded copper cups.
The pieces stand out for their powerful sculptural composition, which combines elaborate helical iron structures with richly textured copper elements and backplates of vegetal ornamentation.
Each sconce features three projecting arms made of wrought iron rods that unfold in dynamic, open spirals around the light points. These three-dimensional forms create a striking interplay of solids and voids, giving the ensemble an extraordinary architectural presence.
The helical structures culminate in hammered copper cups with a gilded finish, whose warm tone establishes a refined chromatic contrast with the depth of the iron's dark patina. The irregularly hammered surfaces capture and reflect the light, enriching the visual depth of the composition.
The rear plaques are particularly interesting, crafted from wrought iron and decorated with stylized leaf motifs, irregularly cut outlines, and incised veins. These organic elements introduce a delicate counterpoint to the marked geometric rhythm of the helical arms, combining naturalistic ornamentation with sculptural construction.
The design reflects the expressive character of postwar European decorative metalwork, a period during which traditional ironworking techniques were reinterpreted through styles akin to modernism and decorative brutalism.
In France, the tradition of ferronnerie d'art (art ironwork) achieved remarkable artistic development thanks to designers and artisans like Gilbert Poillerat, whose creations elevated wrought iron to a highly sophisticated architectural and ornamental dimension.
The formal freedom of the composition also shows affinities with certain aspects of Jean Royère's ornamental lighting, while the integration of organic motifs into functional, sculptural objects evokes the artistic sensibility of Diego Giacometti.
These references are presented solely as stylistic and historical context, without implying a direct attribution to said designers or their workshops.
The contrast between dark iron and luminous copper establishes a sophisticated dialogue between materials, while the spiral structures lend movement and visual lightness despite their robust construction.
An extraordinary pair of mid-century Brutalist wall lights, with a strong decorative presence, especially suited to contemporary interiors, architectural spaces, or interior design projects seeking sculptural and unique lighting.
