Hans Ripa (1912–2001), Swedish Expressionist Floral Still Life, Oil on Canvas, Mid-20th Century
A beautiful and expressive mid-century floral still life by Swedish artist Hans Ripa (1912–2001), executed in oil on canvas.
This vibrant composition depicts an arrangement of magnificent white chrysanthemums and deep red roses, surrounded by lush foliage in rich shades of emerald green, turquoise and deep blue.
The painting is characterised by its bold, spontaneous brushwork and richly textured surface. Thick applications of oil paint, particularly in the delicate white blossoms, create a striking impasto effect, adding depth, movement and a wonderful tactile quality to the composition.
The contrast between the luminous white flowers, intense red roses and expressive green foliage gives the painting a lively yet harmonious appearance.
Ripa's distinctive handling of colour and texture reflects the influence of European Expressionism and Post-Impressionism, while retaining the characteristic qualities of Scandinavian modernist painting.
The painting is signed "Ripa" in the lower left corner.
Presented in an attractive vintage wooden frame with a silver-toned finish and a contrasting cream-coloured inner border, beautifully complementing the colours of the composition.
