both paintings are attributed to the french artist charton-desmazières and clearly belong together in subject, style and technique. One watercolour is signed by the artist, while the other is unsigned.

they feature wonderfully detailed architectural views of historic dijon, with traditional buildings, church spires, narrow streets and small figures bringing the scenes to life.

the paintings are believed to date from around 1900, possibly from the late 19th or early 20th century.

they also have a lovely personal history. On the reverse, handwritten french farewell dedications reveal that they were given as a gift to someone leaving their workplace, as a way of preserving memories of old dijon. A charming detail that adds sentimental and historical interest to the pair.
