An exceptional antique bronze sculpture depicting Lorenzo de’ Medici, Duke of Urbino, known as Il Pensieroso (“The Thinker”), after Michelangelo Buonarroti’s celebrated Renaissance marble masterpiece created between 1526 and 1534 for the Medici Chapel in Florence, Italy.
This finely executed sculptural reduction is attributed to the 19th century, a period when bronze interpretations of important Renaissance masterpieces were highly prized by European collectors and travelers undertaking the Grand Tour.
Beautifully modeled with extraordinary attention to detail, the seated figure is depicted in a contemplative pose, his chin resting upon his hand and his legs elegantly crossed. The elaborate helmet, intricately articulated armor, layered Renaissance garments, and carefully sculpted anatomical features demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship of this small-scale work.
The bronze retains a rich, dark patina with subtle warm bronze highlights that accentuate the intricate modeling and sculptural depth. Its substantial casting and beautifully aged surface contribute to its distinguished antique character.
Professionally presented on a substantial, polished clear Lucite pedestal, the sculpture achieves a striking balance between classical Renaissance artistry and contemporary gallery-style presentation.
Despite its intimate proportions, the sculpture possesses an impressive physical presence, with a combined weight of approximately 6.6 pounds, including its acrylic pedestal.
An elegant and highly collectible decorative work, ideally suited for a distinguished library, executive desk, curated art collection, or sophisticated interior.
