Carved from boxwood (Huangyangmu), the piece features a rich, warm amber-brown patina and a smooth, inviting finish.

The sculpture depicts the Laughing Buddha (Budai or Maitreya), a beloved figure in Asian art symbolizing contentment, generosity, and good fortune. He is shown standing with a broad, joyful smile, a prominent bare belly, and flowing robes that drape naturally around his form. In his left hand, he holds the "cloth sack" (budai), traditionally associated with carrying away troubles and bringing wealth and blessings.

The figure is carved with a wonderful sense of volume and weight, with deep folds in the fabric and expressive facial features. He stands upon a carved, rugged base resembling a rock formation. This piece would make a wonderful focal point on a console table, a serene addition to a meditation space, or a meaningful gift.
