An exceptional vintage bronze sculpture titled "Tejedora de Canastas" (Basket Weaver) by acclaimed Mexican sculptor Tiburcio Ortiz, signed, numbered V/VIII (5 of 8), and dated 1987.
This beautifully executed figurative sculpture depicts a seated nude Mexican artisan engaged in the traditional craft of basket weaving. Her contemplative expression, graceful posture, and carefully modeled hands convey a sense of quiet concentration and dignity, celebrating the enduring traditions of Mexican craftsmanship.
Cast in bronze with a rich, naturally aged dark brown and green patina, the sculpture displays beautifully modeled anatomical details, expressive facial features, and a harmonious balance between realism and modernist abstraction. The figure rests on a substantial polished dark green stone base, complementing the bronze's organic character.
The sculpture is signed Tiburcio, dated 1987, and numbered V/VIII, identifying it as the fifth example from a limited edition of eight.
About Tiburcio Ortiz
Tiburcio Ortiz (born 1945) is a distinguished Mexican sculptor from Santa Catalina Chinango, Oaxaca, whose work explores the human figure, Indigenous Mexican heritage, everyday life, and traditional craftsmanship.
Ortiz studied sculpture at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City from 1966 to 1970 under artists including Manuel Silva Guerrero, Alberto de la Vega, and Elizabeth Catlett. He later taught sculpture at the Academia de San Carlos and the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the Universidad Benito Juárez de Oaxaca.
His work is recognized for its expressive figurative compositions, simplified organic forms, and sensitive representations of Mexican cultural identity. His sculptures have been exhibited in Mexico and internationally.
Collectors who appreciate the work of Francisco Zúñiga, Elizabeth Catlett, Alfredo Zalce, Jorge Marín, and Javier Marín may find a similar appreciation for the human figure, sculptural volume, and expressive interpretations of Mexican identity in Ortiz's work.
A compelling example of late-20th-century Mexican figurative sculpture, Tejedora de Canastas is an elegant addition to a collection of Latin American art, Mexican modernist sculpture, or fine decorative arts.
