Ben Jones, Pair of Monumental Sculptural Paintings from the Ladder Series, 2015
An exceptional pair of large-scale, shaped-panel artworks by American contemporary artist Ben Jones (b. 1977), from his Ladder series, circa 2015.
Executed in acrylic on panel, these dynamic compositions feature bold, interlocking black forms layered over vibrant fluorescent pink, yellow, and orange. Part of Jones's Ladder series, the works explore the transformation of geometric structures into dynamic abstract compositions. The yellow work retains recognizable ladder-like elements, with horizontal bars intersecting looping black forms, while the pink composition takes a more fluid, calligraphic approach, with interwoven ribbons and continuous curves. Together, they evoke an abstract visual language of graffiti, calligraphy, and cartoon imagery characteristic of Jones's distinctive style.
Each work consists of an irregularly shaped, sculpturally cut panel, allowing the imagery to extend beyond the conventional rectangular boundaries of painting. The layered colors create an illusion of depth and movement, transforming the surfaces into dimensional wall sculptures.
Although conceived as individual works, the two compositions can be displayed together in a monumental horizontal, diptych-like installation. Positioned side by side, their interlocking, ribbon-like forms create a continuous visual dialogue, transforming the two works into a unified architectural statement spanning nearly 15 feet. Their complementary forms and contrasting colors make them particularly effective in large-scale residential, commercial, or gallery interiors.
Jones is known for his multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, sculpture, animation, and digital media. A founding member of the influential art collective Paper Rad, he emerged from the early-2000s experimental art scene, developing a recognizable aesthetic characterized by saturated colors, graphic abstraction, humor, and references to popular culture.
Both works were exhibited in Ben Jones: A Technicolor Happening, held at Ace Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, September–October 2015.
