a charming pair of original french watercolour illustrations depicting two much-loved subjects from traditional french childhood: *le petit chaperon rouge* (little red riding hood) and *meunier, tu dors* (miller, you are sleeping), a traditional french children's song.

both illustrations are signed labédan and feature delightful, colourful scenes painted in a naive, storybook style. The first depicts little red riding hood walking through a flower-filled forest, while the second illustrates the playful world of the traditional song, with a sleeping miller, a donkey and a picturesque landscape.

the watercolours are presented in their original wooden frames with pale mounts. A label on the reverse identifies maison v. Lécuyer, a framing and photographic establishment formerly located on rue nationale in nogaro, in the gers region of southwest france, adding a lovely local provenance to the pair.

probably dating from the mid-20th century, around the 1950s, these original illustrations have a wonderfully nostalgic appeal and would make a delightful addition to a vintage nursery, a child's bedroom, a storybook collection or a gallery wall.

both pieces are in very good vintage condition overall, with some minor age-related wear. The paper and mounts show signs of age, and the little red riding hood illustration appears to have shifted slightly within its mount. The frames could benefit from some attention or reframing if desired, but the pieces remain very attractive as they are.
