This is a fine mid-century Spode cachepot (or decorative bowl) in the classic Black Italian pattern. The design was originally introduced by Spode around 1816 and features a romantic Italianate landscape with classical ruins, a stone bridge, trees, pastoral figures, livestock, and a distant castle, all enclosed by the signature elaborate floral and scrollwork border derived from Chinese Imari porcelain. The piece is decorated in crisp black transfer printing on a white ground with gilt bands at the rim and near the foot. The interior shows a dense black floral and scroll border around the rim with a plain white well. The underside is clearly marked “Spode England Italian Spode Design C.1816.” Black Italian was produced primarily on decorative wares from approximately 1954 to 1974, placing this example firmly in the mid-20th century. It measures 6 inches high by 7 inches across and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. The gilt is bright and the transfer is sharp. Perfect as a cachepot, centerpiece, or display piece.
