This rare pair of model 540p lamps exemplifies gino sarfatti’s ongoing fascination with light as both a technical and architectural medium. Designed in the late 1960s, the lamps combine an almost laboratory like clarity with a soft, atmospheric presence once illuminated. The construction is deceptively simple yet highly considered: a solid acrylic glass base supports a white painted aluminum shade, punctuated by a precise die cut dot pattern that subtly modulates the emitted light. One of the most compelling aspects of the 540p is its dual functionality. Thanks to the discreet opening in the base, the lamps can be used either as table lamps or mounted directly on the wall, allowing the same object to shift effortlessly between domestic and architectural roles. This flexibility reflects sarfatti’s belief that lighting should adapt to space and use, rather than dictate it. When lit, the lamps produce a warm, nuanced glow, with light gently escaping through the perforations in the shade while remaining focused and controlled. The acrylic glass base enhances this effect, giving the lamp a lightness and transparency that contrasts beautifully with the solid aluminum form. This pair is in excellent original condition, fully functional, and electrically tested.
