A late Victorian ceramic shell jardiniere designed by Christopher Dresser and manufactured by Ault Pottery circa 1890. This sculptural earthenware planter combines naturalistic shell forms with the richly coloured glazes associated with the British Aesthetic Movement. The rounded vessel is formed from three overlapping scallop shells, their deeply moulded, radiating ribs creating a striking interplay of texture and colour. Each shell rises towards an irregular, undulating rim, giving the jardiniere an organic, almost floral silhouette. Finished in a glossy olive-green glaze, the surface displays variations of chartreuse, deep forest green and near-black, with subtle blue and violet iridescence. The glaze pools within the recessed channels while catching the raised shell ridges, emphasising the depth and movement of the moulded decoration. The underside bears the impressed Ault ribbon mark and a model number. A distinctive example of late 19th-century English art pottery, suitable for use as a small decorative planter or sculptural ceramic vessel. Condition: Good antique condition. One small glaze chip to the outer rim, interior wear and age-related surface wear to the glaze. Presents well overall. Dimensions: Height 11.5 cm (4.53 in). Diameter 15 cm (5.91 in). This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
