Bronze sculpture by the Belgian painter and sculptor Charles Delporte (1928-2012).
A face with closed eyes emerges from a layered, organic form. The bronze texture reflects the light, so the sculpture changes with the hour of the day. The organic lines and the peaceful face are expressive enough to bring the viewer to rest.
The sculpture takes its title from Rimbaud's poem, in which a young soldier lies asleep in a green valley. Only in the final line does it become clear that he will not wake again.
This piece was exhibited at the Palais des Papes in Avignon. Stamped and numbered 22/50.
