a fine bust of a young woman wearing a flowered scarf in a late art deco style, in glazed and vitrified polychrome ceramic, entirely hand-painted, created and signed under the base by the trevir factory in vicenza. The sculpture is made of cast earthenware, hollow inside and finished entirely by hand. Its solid, compact ceramic body weighs 1.045 kg, and the unglazed base rim reveals the light-colored texture of the biscuit. The generously sized sculpture depicts a young woman with a full, smiling face, her gaze turned to the side, and her blond hair gathered in soft waves, rendered with a fine comb-like incision that lends movement and vibration to the surface. The head is wrapped in a scarf tied under the chin, painted on a white background with large pink and red flowers with black stamens, fan-shaped green foliage, and chains of black dotted brushstrokes forming an elegant lattice. The white collar, bordered by a scalloped blue hem, rests on a yellow and orange checked dress with thin black lines, fashioned in soft pleats. The vibrant contrast between the floral motif and the checkered pattern of the dress is striking, as is the freshness of the face, with the eyebrows traced in a single thin line and the slightly rosy cheeks, and the pictorial quality of the scarf, which continues uninterrupted across the entire back, transforming it into a truly decorative panel. The work dates back to around 1940-1950 and was created in the workshops of the factory at via fra paolo sarpi 5 in vicenza. The manufacturer's initials, composed of the intertwined letters "t" and "r" in a monogram, are painted in black on the inside of the base, followed by the model number 223 and the number 7 after the slash, likely referring to the variant or decorator. The mark corresponds to that reported in historical repertoires dedicated to the manufacturer, as shown in the last photos, confirming the attribution to trevir with certainty.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
the trevir factory in vicenza was active from the late 1930s onward and specialized in the production of artistic ceramics in both modern and traditional styles, establishing itself in one of italy's oldest and most prestigious ceramics regions. The vicenza area, along with the nearby towns of bassano del grappa and nove, had been home to renowned manufacturers such as manardi and antonibon since the 17th century. During the war and postwar years, trevir stood out for the quality of its models, a result of collaborations with renowned ceramic sculptors such as otello de maria. Its activity continued until the 1960s under the direction of gino fontana. From a stylistic perspective, the factory interpreted the great period of italian figurative ceramics between the two world wars with its own distinctive style, drawing inspiration from the contemporary turin and veneto schools. He favored genre subjects, figures in regional costume, young women, and romantic and sporting scenes, always characterized by fresh, vibrant hand painting and strong color contrasts. Trevir's works are now documented in specialized publications dedicated to 20th-century vicenza ceramics and are sought after by italian and international collectors of modern antiques. They remain a recognizable testament to the venetian artisans' ability to combine craftsmanship, color, and formal elegance. In the last photo, we've included additional historical information on the production process for those who wish to delve deeper. This piece has an attribution mark,
