A richly layered mixed-media drawing by Ruth Esserman (1927–2022), a Chicago-based artist and educator whose work was exhibited nationally and internationally for more than five decades. Esserman was widely known for her intricate, map-like abstractions built from dense cross-hatched linework and translucent washes of color—an approach strongly reflected in this piece.
An atmospheric abstract composition depicting numerous small, dark human silhouettes scattered across an expansive landscape. The figures appear in loose clusters and solitary groupings, casting elongated shadows across a softly blended, textured surface
The overall effect is contemplative and somewhat surreal, with the repeated figures creating a strong sense of scale, movement, and distance.
Esserman exhibited with the Arts Club of Chicago (member since 1964) and in major juried shows at the Denver Art Museum, Minneapolis Art Museum, Rockford Art Museum Biennial, and the Pilzn International Drawing Biennale, where she received Best in Show. Works by the artist are included in numerous private and public collections.
