A richly layered mixed-media drawing by Ruth Esserman (1927–2022), a Chicago-based artist and educator whose work was exhibited nationally and internationally for more than five decades. Esserman was widely known for her intricate, map-like abstractions built from dense cross-hatched linework and translucent washes of color—an approach strongly reflected in this piece.
Abstract figurative composition featuring a geometric architectural structure resembling pyramids, surrounded by numerous tiny scattered human figures. Warm terracotta, rust, dusty rose, and soft peach tones blend with ivory and cream highlights, while fine black linework adds contrast and definition. Layered textures and angular forms create a sense of movement, scale, and perspective.
Esserman exhibited with the Arts Club of Chicago (member since 1964) and in major juried shows at the Denver Art Museum, Minneapolis Art Museum, Rockford Art Museum Biennial, and the Pilzn International Drawing Biennale, where she received Best in Show. Works by the artist are included in numerous private and public collections.
