A mother in an ornate crimson dress holds a bunch of red poppies aloft, a young child tucked against her side, with the golden walls of Jerusalem rising behind them. The surface is Stern's signature technique: thick oil paint carved and incised line by line (sgraffito), so the patterning of the dress, the jewelry, and the faces are drawn into the paint itself. His Hebrew signature is incised into the lower left corner. Provenance: the original typed exhibition entry label survives on the back, from a show at Temple Beth Am, 1039 S. La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles, listing the artist, title, medium (oil), and exhibition price of $275; the label's printed ZIP code dates the showing to 1964 or later. Stern (1923-1992) fled Hungary in 1939-40, studied and later taught at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, and became one of Israel's most beloved painters of Jewish life. Condition: very good - paint surface intact and stable, nothing cracked, flaking, or lifting; colors vivid throughout; period frame with only minor age-expected wear; exhibition label legible, torn at one corner. Canvas: 11.5 x 15.5 in. Framed: 18.5 W x 22.25 H x 2 D in. See less
