Konny 62.” A boat with a rust-red sail sits drawn up at the water’s edge, its green and black hull set against a vivid blue bay. To the right, whitewashed houses with red tile roofs and green shutters step up the shore among agaves, flowering shrubs and climbing vines. Across the bay, a long village dotted with cypresses lies at the foot of blue-green mountains, with a few white sails on the horizon.

Sunlit southern coasts like this were a staple of postwar European painting, made for buyers who wanted that light on their own walls. The heavy paint gives the surface real texture up close. It comes in what we believe is its original painted dark green wood frame with rattan mat.

It measures 60 × 80 cm (23.6 × 31.5 in) unframed and 74 × 94 cm (29.1 × 37 in) framed. See less
