A marked ceramic leopard candle holder by boxer ceramiche, made in italy and approximately dating to the late 20th century. The seated feline combines an alert, snarling expression with richly spotted decoration and a small candle socket rising above its head.
description
the leopard sits upright on its haunches, with straight forelegs, an open mouth and clearly modelled teeth. Its cream-coloured glazed body is animated by irregular black and brown markings, warm peach-toned shading and vivid yellow eyes.
a vase-shaped candle socket crowns the figure, turning the sculptural animal into a functional candle holder. The unexpected combination gives the piece a theatrical, almost heraldic character: part feline portrait, part flamboyant italian decorative object.
design / maker / history
the base carries the boxer ceramiche and made in italy marks. Ceramiche boxer has specialised in ornamental ceramic animals at bassano del grappa since 1985. This example is approximately dated to the late 20th century.
