A wonderfully evocative late 17th-century English carved oak Bible box, dating to approximately 1680–1700 and presented on a later fitted stand. This handsome piece of early English furniture combines the practical character of a traditional hinged storage box with the richly decorative carving associated with Jacobean and Stuart-period craftsmanship. The front is particularly appealing, featuring a symmetrical arrangement of deeply incised arches, flowing foliate forms, and small punched rosettes that reflect the ornamental traditions of English vernacular furniture. Originally intended to safeguard books, documents, or other valued household possessions, boxes of this type are often referred to as Bible boxes, although their historical uses were not necessarily limited to religious texts. The later stand elevates the box to a convenient working height, transforming it into a distinctive and practical furnishing while preserving the character of the original early oak case.
Constructed in oak, the rectangular box features a substantial hinged lid with a gently projecting molded edge, opening to reveal a spacious, unfinished interior displaying the natural color and texture of aged timber. The front is decorated with a particularly attractive arrangement of carved arches and stylized foliage, punctuated by small punched floral motifs that add depth and texture to the design. A substantial iron lockplate with a shaped hasp occupies the center of the front, contributing to the box's historic appearance. The lid retains iron strap hinges, while the interior displays traditional board construction and the irregularities associated with early woodworking. The box rests on a later oak stand with straight legs, decorative edge carving, a shaped apron, and connecting stretchers. The stand complements the early box without attempting to disguise the difference in their periods of construction, creating a pleasing balance between historic character and practical usability.
The piece is in nice antique condition, showing considerable age-appropriate surface wear, scattered scratches, old marks, minor chips, and variations in color and finish consistent with the box's considerable age and long history of use. The oak has developed a rich, dark patina, particularly across the carved front, where generations of handling have softened the surfaces and enhanced the character of the decoration. There are visible age-related separations and minor losses to portions of the moldings and carved details, along with evidence of past repairs and alterations. The iron hardware displays oxidation and wear consistent with age, and the working condition of the lock has not been established. The later stand also exhibits scattered wear and minor imperfections, complementing the rustic character of the original box. With its generously proportioned interior and convenient elevated height, this handsome piece would make a wonderful accent table, entryway furnishing, or storage chest for books, documents, and personal belongings. A particularly charming example of early English craftsmanship that brings more than three centuries of history and character into the modern home. 30h x 24w x 17d
