This heavy mid-century modernist wall plaque by friedrich schäffenacker features a bold, vertical abstract composition typical of his peak creative period in the 1960s. The design masterfully balances deep cobalt blues and dark grays against dramatic, volcanic bursts of vibrant orange, yellow, and deep crimson glaze, creating a tactile, highly textural surface with a strong brutalist and mid-century modern aesthetic.
helmut friedrich schäffenacker (1921–2010) was a highly celebrated german sculptor, painter, and ceramicist based in ulm/donau. Renowned worldwide for his innovative mid-century studio pottery, schäffenacker revolutionized post-war ceramic art with his expressive forms and experimental glazes. He won numerous prestigious awards, including gold medals at the international ceramics exhibitions in faenza, italy.
the piece features the original paper studio label on the lower front left corner. The reverse side is fully incised and stamped into the raw clay body with his official workshop marks: "schäffenacker / ulm/do. / made in germany / handgeformt" (hand-formed), alongside his specific incised form model number. It comes equipped with its integrated factory wire loop on the back, ready for immediate wall mounting.
