The base is made of hundreds of vertical steel rods welded to circular rings, which together form a tapered sculptural pedestal. Its rhythm and shimmer have made it one of the most recognizable designs of the American modernist era.

The base is topped with a generous round oak top that has bold, cathedral-figured grain and a warm honey patina. The oak gives the piece a more organic, inviting character than the more commonly seen glass and marble tops.

The underside retains the original Knoll International label printed with the 745 Fifth Avenue, New York address, confirming its provenance and dating it to the company’s 1970s production.

Platner pieces are a cornerstone of mid-century modern design, and this table works equally well in a modernist, contemporary, or eclectic living room. See less
