18th-century French tin-glazed faience teapot in the Rouen style. A globular body on a short foot with a straight spout and loop handle, painted in cobalt blue and iron red with hanging lambrequin swags, scrolling foliage and stylised flowers, with a band of petals around the mouth. The red earthenware body shows at the foot rim. Lid missing.
The hanging swags, called lambrequins, imitate the lace and embroidered borders of the period. Rouen made the style famous in the early 1700s and faience potteries across France copied it for the rest of the century.
8" long, 5" wide, 4.75" tall.
