A striking pair of Italian obelisks in the Grand Tour tradition, each tapering shaft and plinth base veneered in black marble and inlaid with a rich array of specimen stones, including lapis lazuli, malachite, rosso antico, rose and grey marbles, honey and green onyx, and a spotted jasper, all set within fine gilt-toned borders. The shafts rest on stepped, molded black marble bases.
Obelisks like these were treasured souvenirs of the 18th- and 19th-century Grand Tour, displayed in libraries and on mantels as small showcases of Italy's decorative stones. This 20th-century pair carries on that tradition and works beautifully on a mantel, bookshelf, or flanking a console.
Each obelisk stands 21" high.
