Held a Little Longer, an abstract painting in mixed media on panel by Monterey artist Mandie Colangelo, carries a broad stroke of lemon yellow across the panel on a diagonal, thick and crusted, wrapped in a soft halo of cobalt like a sunbeam caught and held in place. Behind it, a pale seafoam ground glows within misty blue, and a turquoise cloud floats at the top, edged with peach and amber. From that cloud, fine threads of navy, aqua and orange fall in long, delicate drips like gentle rain. Colangelo paired one bold gesture with the slow patience of gravity, building the yellow in heavy ridges and letting the drips find their own way. In her CASCADE series, it is about a sweet moment that lingers just a little longer.
Morning light and this painting belong together. Try it in a kitchen, a breakfast room or a bright home office against soft gray, and let oak, rattan and ceramics in white and indigo extend its cheerful spirit. A bowl of fruit on a nearby table adds to the ease.
Mixed media on panel, 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
