At the heart sits a dark square, and within it a pale flower opens, its four petals pressed with crosshatched lines like woven reeds and edged in ragged black. A small cluster of gold leaf glows at the center, warm and tender. Colangelo built the surface from layered textiles and textured paste, letting each material bring its own character, and the flower emerged almost on its own. From her RELIC series, it is about a whispered hope held close, gentle, patient and full of light.

Calm and contemplative, it suits a bedroom, a meditation space or a quiet study. Warm stone, raw linen, walnut and candlelight make a peaceful corner where it can be enjoyed in stillness. A simple bench or a floor cushion nearby invites a few unhurried minutes of rest.

Mixed media on canvas, 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
