Finally Free opens from left to right. On the left, the world is gray and held in place: thick brushstrokes of silver, white and charcoal, crossed by two thin black lines like the bars of a fence. Then a beam of white light cuts diagonally through a soft blue sky, and a rich cobalt form spills across it, deepening to indigo, its surface finely wrinkled and rippled. Below, the blue trails into a dark drip, while tiny white dots scatter like released breath. Colangelo set the brushed gray against the free-flowing pour and let the contrast speak. In her COSMOS series, it is about stepping into the open after a long time, light and unafraid.
Place it where each day begins, in an entry, a bedroom or a home office. Soft, cool walls echo its quieter side, while bright cushions, plants and art books pick up the livelier one. Pale oak, linen and a touch of polished chrome keep the room open and airy.
Mixed media on canvas, 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
