Warm sepia, cinnamon and tea brown pool and spot over a pale cream ground, dense and rusted in some places, worn almost to white in others. Fine dotted patterns surface and fade through the stains, like the imprint of a long forgotten weave. Up close it recalls old paper, weathered stone or the wall of a house that has seen many seasons. Colangelo layered and pressed the color, then let it bloom and dry on its own terms, welcoming every blot. Part of her RELIC series, it is about quiet strength: a surface that has weathered much and still glows.

It brings a sense of history to a study, a library corner or a farmhouse dining room. Reclaimed wood, leather-bound books and earthenware give the palette a lived-in setting, and a warm plaster wall lets every subtle mark show. Linen and aged iron complete a look that feels collected over time.

Mixed media on canvas, 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
