Slow Growth lets spring take its time. Lime and leaf green swirl around the edges of the panel, while the center warms into a field of shimmering gold, brushed in wide arcs and sprinkled with gritty clusters that rise like soil, seed or bark. Touches of wine and rust show through below, like old roots holding the ground together. Colangelo layered, scraped and dusted the paint with metallic powder, letting each coat dry before inviting the next, so the surface settled into crusts and ridges no brush could plan. Part of her RELIC series, the painting makes patience visible, a quiet tribute to everything that grows slowly and well.
Terracotta pots, cane chairs and warm oak make easy companions here. Try it in a sunlit kitchen or an entry full of plants, where it carries a garden freshness through every season. Cream or soft sage walls suit the palette, and a few unglazed ceramics on a nearby shelf echo its earthy surface.
Mixed media on panel, 18 x 24 in (45.7 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
