Idyll, an abstract landscape in mixed media on panel by Monterey artist Mandie Colangelo, is calm and sunlit, like a summer afternoon by the water. Soft blocks of cobalt, turquoise, sunny yellow, pale lilac and sea green sit together like a patchwork of fields and sky. Across them, pigment powders leave raised, sandy textures: a band of plum granules over the yellow, a creamy speckled column on the right, and a mound of teal grit holding a small shining stone in the lower corner. White splashes skip along the top like spray from a wave. Colangelo let the powders fall where they would and pressed them into the wet paint, welcoming each unexpected texture. From her BLOOM series, it is peaceful and tactile, full of gentle contentment.
It belongs in a breakfast room, a sunroom or a lake house sitting room. Bleached wood, rattan chairs and striped linen cushions suit the relaxed palette, and a jug of garden flowers on the table adds to its ease. Soft daylight from a nearby window rewards the textured surface throughout the day.
Mixed media on panel, 18 x 24 in (45.7 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
