Before It Was Said catches the moment when words gather, ready to spill. Thick navy pours down from the top in long, wandering strands, crossing a bright patchwork of sunflower yellow, hot raspberry and minty sea green. Some drips run all the way to the bottom edge, while others stop halfway, as if they changed their minds. Beneath, the colors are soft and sprayed with a velvety grain, and the blue sits raised and glossy on top, full of tiny ridges and pooled ends. Colangelo poured with abandon and let each line travel freely, curious to see where it would land. In her CASCADE series, it holds the charged, hopeful feeling of something about to be spoken.
Above a desk in a home office or a creative studio, it brings spark to long working afternoons. A pale plaster or warm white wall keeps it crisp and lively. Stacked books, a leather desk chair and a brass task lamp ground it, and one bright accent on a nearby shelf picks up the palette.
Mixed media on panel, 18 x 24 in (45.7 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
