Faraway Hope, an abstract landscape in mixed media on canvas by Monterey artist Mandie Colangelo, sweeps a sheet of pale blue across its lower half, crumpled and folded with soft creases pressed into the paint. Fine combed lines run through it like rain on a window, and inside, a cross-hatched oval of yellow glows like light seen through mist. Above, a band of slate blue rises toward warm gold, and in the upper right a white oblong shines, ringed in yellow, like a lamp left on far across the water. Its reflection ripples in horizontal streaks along the right edge, with small dabs of peach and pink in the lower corner. Colangelo pressed, pulled and layered without knowing the outcome. From her COSMOS series, it is about holding on to a distant light and trusting it will stay.
Airy and coastal in feeling, it suits a bedroom, a guest suite or a sunlit landing, anywhere a sense of calm is welcome. Sand-toned walls, bleached wood, rope or rattan accents and soft natural textiles create a breezy atmosphere around it, and a linen-covered chair nearby invites a long, unhurried look.
Mixed media on canvas, 20 x 20 in (50.8 x 50.8 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
